What is a shipping container?

The 20ft container works well for dense, heavy cargo. It reaches its weight limit before it fills its volume. The 40ft container works better for lighter, bulky goods. It gives you twice the volume for a relatively small increase in freight cost.
In practice, a 40ft container costs roughly 40–60% more than a 20ft on most routes, not double. If your cargo is light, a 40ft often gives better value per cubic metre.
High cube containers have the same footprint as a standard 40ft container but are 30 cm taller. The external height is 2.90 m instead of 2.59 m. The internal height increases from 2.39 m to 2.70 m, and the total usable volume rises from around 57 m³ to around 67 m³.
That extra 10 m³ matters more than it sounds. For cargo stacked on pallets, the added height can mean fitting one more layer. For lightweight goods such as mattresses, flat-pack furniture, or large machinery with a tall profile, the high cube is often the only option that works.
High cube containers are increasingly common on deep-sea routes. Many shipping lines now treat the 40ft high cube as their standard box rather than a specialist option. Check with your freight forwarder which container type is the default on your route, as this affects pricing.

A 20ft high cube exists but is rare. Most carriers do not stock 20ft high cubes as standard equipment. If you need extra height in a 20ft footprint, check availability before booking. You may need to source a specialist operator.
A refrigerated container, or reefer, is a temperature-controlled unit fitted with its own mechanical refrigeration system. It can maintain internal temperatures from -30°C to +30°C, covering everything from deep-frozen fish to fresh flowers to pharmaceuticals.
Reefer containers have the same external dimensions as standard dry containers, either 20ft or 40ft, but the internal volume is smaller. The refrigeration unit takes up space at one end. A 40ft reefer typically has around 60 m³ of usable internal space compared to 67 m³ in a 40ft high cube dry box.
The refrigeration unit runs on electrical power supplied by the ship during the ocean leg. At ports and in depots, the container plugs into shore power. When moving by truck, a genset (generator set) can be attached to keep the temperature constant. You must confirm with your freight forwarder that each handling point on the route has reefer plug-in facilities. Gaps in the cold chain are a serious risk.

An open top container is a standard dry container with the roof removed and replaced by a removable tarpaulin cover. The end doors remain in place. The open roof allows cargo to be loaded from above by crane or forklift. This is useful when the cargo is too tall to fit through the doors.
Open top containers come in 20ft and 40ft sizes. Internal dimensions are the same as standard dry containers, aside from the open roof. The tarpaulin is secured over the top and bowed out over the cargo if needed. The cargo must not protrude more than a set limit above the container walls, typically around 30 cm for a “half-height over-height” load.
If your cargo exceeds the top of the container, this is called out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo. You need approval from the shipping line before booking. Flat rack cargo is exposed on the sides and top, so all goods must be properly protected against weather and seawater spray. Car carrier containers are specialist open-frame containers designed to carry vehicles. Two or three cars can be loaded on adjustable ramps inside the frame. These are used for smaller vehicle volumes where a full RORO (Roll-on Roll-off) vessel shipment is not economical.

FCL, Full Container Load means you book the entire container for your cargo. You fill it (or partly fill it) and it travels as a single unit. It is the right choice when your cargo fills 70–80% or more of a container, or when you have specific requirements around hygiene, security, or container type.
LCL, Less than Container Load means your cargo shares a container with other shippers’ goods. A consolidation agent or NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) groups multiple smaller shipments together, loads them into one container, and splits them again at the destination port. LCL typically costs around £50–£120 per cubic metre on common UK import routes from Asia, compared to a flat rate for an FCL that may start at £1,200–£2,500 for a 20ft box on the same route.
The container type choice matters here. LCL is only available for standard dry cargo in a standard dry container. If you need a reefer, an open top, a flat rack, or a tank, you are booking FCL. There is no LCL equivalent for specialist container types.

They are structurally sound with no major wear and usually under 12 months old. One-trip containers cost more but are the right choice for food-grade storage, pharmaceutical use, or conversion projects.
